Volunteers play an important role in the Discovery Academy of Science community. Whether you are helping in a classroom, supporting a school event, chaperoning a field trip, or assisting with an after-school activity, your time and involvement help create meaningful experiences for students.
All volunteers must complete the appropriate screening process before participating in school activities.
Choose the Right Volunteer Level
Level 1 Volunteer
Level 1 screening is intended for volunteer activities where you will remain under the supervision of school staff.
Examples include:
- Classroom volunteering
- Great American Teach-In
- Other supervised school activities
Level 1 screening is completed by the school and approved status is valid for one year.
Level 2 Volunteer
Level 2 screening is required for activities where a volunteer may be with students without direct staff supervision.
Examples include:
- Field trip chaperoning
- Coaching an after-school club
- Certain school events
Level 2 volunteers must complete fingerprinting through an approved provider. Approved Level 2 status is valid for five years.

Level 1 generally covers activities performed under direct school staff supervision. Level 2 is required when a volunteer may have unsupervised contact with students. Contact your campus if you’re unsure which screening applies.
Classroom Volunteer
Level 1
Help with classroom activities, projects, or other opportunities while under the supervision of school staff.
Great American Teach-In
Level 1
Share your career, skills, or experiences with students during supervised school activities.
Field Trip Chaperone
Level 2
Assist with field trips and student supervision outside the regular classroom environment.
Club or Activity Coach
Level 2
Support an after-school club, team, or activity where you may work with students without direct staff supervision.

Volunteer opportunities change throughout the school year and may vary by campus. Current opportunities can include field trips, classroom activities, school events, enrichment programs, and other campus needs.

Important Volunteer Information
Volunteers must follow school policies and maintain the confidentiality of student information. The current Level 1 registration form also notes that volunteer participation is subject to school approval and that certain assignments require Level 2 screening.
